|Drew Fish Band, “Wishful Drinkin’”|
Fish stands out among Texas roadhouse-circuit regulars with music that leans more heavily toward traditional country than the more typical country-rock hybrids.
He and his band can still kick up dust when it serves the song, but there’s plenty of old-school twang and swing here, thanks to the studio contributions of fiddler Jason Roberts, steel guitar/dobro player Geoff Queen and Reckless Kelly fiddle/mandolin ringer Cody Braun.
Tunes such as “Lone Star Saturday Night,” “One Beer at a Time” and the title track play too easily into the drinking-songs stereotype of his genre, but Fish shines brightly on the beautiful waltz “Every Damn Time,” wisely rendered as a duet with angelic-voiced country hitmaker Pam Tillis.
